Your Voice is Meant to Be Heard
Dear Witchy Writer,
I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, I was taught my voice was a nuisance.
I heard a lot about how I talked too much, laughed too loud, asked too many questions, needed too much help, cried too much....and on and on.
The basic message was - “Your voice is annoying.”
As part of my healing process, I’ve learned that far from being an annoyance, my voice is both needed and wanted in the world.
As an adult, I’ve found kindred spirits who want to chat with me for hours. I’ve had good bosses, who’ve asked me to say more in meetings. When I started blogging, my audience wanted to read more of what I had to say.
This was huge for me, because I always believed I needed to get myself to talk less in order to be accepted. I discovered the opposite was true. I needed to put my voice out into the world more in order to find a sense of true belonging.
I’m sharing this with you, because my experience as a child isn’t a unique one. Many of us have been taught our voice isn’t needed or wanted.
You might not get acknowledged in your workplace when you have something true and important to say that could make things better.
You might get interrupted when you’re in the middle of telling your favorite story at a party, the one you know will be a crowd pleaser.
You might find people giving you strange looks when you tell them what you really think, feel, or believe.
You might be told to not be so sensitive when you share your heartbreak about a situation that matters to you.
I’m here to tell you that how these people have responded to your voice isn’t what’s true about your voice, especially when you find a community of kind, wonderful and supportive folks.
Your voice is wanted.
Your stories are needed.
Your words are important.
Your emotions are relevant.
Your self-expression matters.
I am so passionate about supporting your writing life, because I know your voice is meant to be heard, and I would love to be a co-conspirator in making that happen.
