What’s Making My Writing Life Joyful This Week
I started a new blog this week! It’s called Sleuth Hero Alien: A bookish blog about cozy mysteries, cozy fantasies, and quiet sci-fi.
Over the past couple of years, it’s become clear that all I want to talk about is my reading life. I love reading, and I especially love taking part in bookish communities. I’m all about the online book clubs!
The one problem I’ve stumbled upon, however, is that most of these communities don’t focus on the books I most enjoy reading.
It’s either a literary fiction community that sometimes talks about fantasies, or it’s a fantasy / sci-fi community that talks mostly about dark fantasy that verges into horror.
I’ve been wishing for a community of folks who are interested in cozy genre books, so I can talk about my favorite books.
So, I finally created my own thing about it.
I published my first post this week, and it fueled my creative fire. After writing this post, I felt more alive and joyful. Instead of feeling stressed or anxious, this writing felt like freedom.
This made me think about how landing on the right topic for writing matters.
It could be so easy for me to dismiss this idea, because cozy books aren’t high literature. They don’t win prizes, and they often aren’t on best-seller lists.
If I had let this thought take the lead in my creative life, I might’ve started a bookish blog about “serious” literature, and then my writing would’ve made me feel bored and anxious.
Instead, writing about the thing that makes me come alive, is…making me come alive! Yay!
If you would love to learn more about the cozy reading life, join me at Sleuth Hero Alien. The first post is called: What is a Cozy Mystery?
A Bit of Magic for Your Writing Life
The moon is waning this week. That means it’s a great time to do some release magic for your writing life. Here is a simple ritual you could do:
Start your ritual with a grounding practice. Take 5 slow, deep breaths, and then notice the bottoms of your feet and the touch of the floor or ground beneath you.
Journal for 5 minutes about where you feel blocked in your writing life right now.
Write your block down on a piece of paper.
Destroy the paper safely. Tear it, shred it, soak it in water until it dissolves, or burn it*.
Take a final deep breath to close your ritual.
This kind of ritual is powerful, because you are naming what is holding you back, and you’re telling yourself and the universe that you’re ready to let it go.
Of course, the process of release happens on its own timeline. Sometimes it takes two minutes to be done with a block, other times it can take a much longer healing journey.
Either way, the intention of this ritual is to help you shift your energy and to remind you that you’ve got this.
*If you burn your paper, please use fire safety. Burn it in a fire safe container with water nearby.
