How Your Voice Could Change The World
Dear Writerly Woman,
One of the reasons I am so passionate about helping you become a woman who writes is that I wholeheartedly believe the world will be better when your voice is in it.
I don't know about you, but when I was growing up I was taught my voice was a nuisance.
I heard a lot about how I talked too much, laughed too loud, asked too many questions, needed too much help, cried too much....and on and on and on.
The basic message was - "Hey you, your voice is a big annoyance."
As part of my healing as a grownup, I've learned that far from being an annoyance, my voice is both needed and wanted in the world.
As an adult, when I've found kindred spirit friends, they wondered why I didn't talk more. When I've had good bosses, they've asked me to say more in meetings. When I started blogging for my ideal audience, they wanted to read more of what I had to say.
This was huge for me, because I always believed I needed to get myself to talk less in order to be accepted. I discovered the opposite was true. I needed to put my voice out more into the world in order to find a sense of true belonging.
I'm sharing this with you, because my experience as a child isn't a unique one. Many, many women are taught in one way or another that their voice isn't needed or wanted.
You might not get acknowledged in your work place when you have something true and important to say that could make things better.
You might get interrupted when you're in the middle of telling your favorite story at a party, the one you know will be a crowd pleaser.
You might find people giving you strange looks when you tell them what you really think, feel, or believe.
You might be told to not be so sensitive when you share your heartbreak about a situation that matters to you.
All of these circumstances carry a message with them, and that message is "Hey you, your voice isn't important or relevant here."
But I'm here to say, "Screw that message!" I'm here to tell you that how these people have responded to your voice isn't what's true about your voice.
Your voice is wanted.
Your stories are needed.
Your words are important.
Your emotions are relevant.
Your self-expression matters.
I believe the more you express your authenticity through writing the better the world will become, because authenticity changes things.
Authenticity cuts through all the chaos and all the fakeness. Authenticity puts simple, clear, realness into the world, and the world could definitely use more realness right now.
I encourage you to write authentically, because your truth matters. Your truth isn't frivolous. Your truth can make the world a better place.
Yes, some people will get annoyed or will play power games when you share your truth, but there are so many more people who could find true belonging when they read your words.
There are people who could feel more understood. There are people who could learn something they didn't know. There are people who could find healing from a story you write, just as you find healing from other people's stories.
We're nearing the end of 2019, and as we move through the transition of the New Year, I would love to help you become a woman who expresses herself bravely and authentically through the written word, because I know the world will become a better place when you do.
